Match Report

Penclawdd welcomed bottom of the table Morriston to the ‘Rec’ where a win would greatly enhance the chance of finishing the league campaign in second place.

Despite their lowly league position Morriston started the game very brightly and went close to breaching the home defence. Penclawdd however took the lead when Rhys Williams slotted a penalty from 40 metres after Morriston had transgressed. Penclawdd 3-0 Morriston

Penclawdd started to win quality ball at the lineout through Richard Deakin and began to exert pressure through Paul James and prop Tîm Williams. Excellent play saw the ball being slung wide by the home side but a poor pass prevented an easy score for wing Jonathan Tanner.

Tanner was again to the fore when he followed up his speculative kick to haul down a Morriston defender near his own line. The Penclawdd backs combined well again with centre James Ratti creating problems for the visiting defence. Unfortunately for Penclawdd another poor pass, this time to wing Max Tew, resulted in a certain try being lost.

The home side did however add to their account when Rhys Williams slotted his second penalty on 35 minutes. Penclawdd 6-0 Morriston

Despite good defensive work by Penclawdd particularly by Gareth Swistun and Tîm Williams, Morriston fought back to score a well deserved try that was converted. Penclawdd 6-7 Morriston

An excellent kick by Rhys Williams put Penclawdd to within 5 metres of the Morriston line. Richard Deakin won excellent lineout ball and fed prop Tîm Williams who ploughed into the visitors pack. Morriston conceded a penalty on their line and they failed to stop livewire scrum half Paul James from crashing over after taking a quick tap penalty. Rhys Williams added the conversion. Penclawdd 13-7 Morriston

To add to their woes Morriston gave the referee some backchat after the conversion and were penalised on the half way line. Rhys Williams stepped up and showed his excellent kicking ability with a well taken penalty.

HALF-TIME: Penclawdd 16-7 Morriston

Penclawdd began to show their dominance in the set pieces with the front row of Tîm Williams, Tîm Eynon and Matthew Davies driving the opposition back in the scrum. Richard Deakin also won some great ball at the lineout.

It was from Deakin that Penclawdd nearly scored their second try of the day. Good lineout ball was initially driven by the forwards, Ceri Jones then found James Ratti with a great long pass. Ratti made excellent ground and fed inside to Jonathan Tanner only for the wing to be held up over the line.

Further set piece dominance provided great ball that was moved wide by Penclawdd although they failed to get a further try mainly through poor handling and stout defence from the visitors who were fighting to stay in the Division with only a handful of games to play.

The main threat for Penclawdd came from centre James Ratti who made numerous assaults into the visitors defence. Unfortunately the home side were not able to capitalise on his efforts.

On 60 minutes flanker Stuart John replaced Spencer Bessant and immediately made an impact with a couple of surging drives that have become his ‘forte’. Leigh Ratti and Andrew Jackett then replaced Gareth Swistun and Tîm Williams respectively as the home side attempted to kill the game.

Another good drive by Stuart John earned Penclawdd a penalty that Rhys Williams easily landed to take the score to Penclawdd 19-7 Morriston.

With the game effectively won Steve Isaac replaced Matthew Davies for only his second 1st XV game. The remaining minutes of the match saw Penclawdd pin Morriston in their own half and claim a deserved victory.

FINAL SCORE: Penclawdd 19-7 Morriston

Penclawdd Man of the Match: James Ratti

Although this was not the most entertaining game of the season due to the numerous mistakes by both sides, Penclawdd were happy to record another victory that puts them in with an excellent chance of finishing the season in second place in the Division and of therefore gaining promotion via the ‘play off’s’. The ‘tight five’ were particularly effective in the set pieces with Richard Deakin and Tîm Williams performing well. Behind the scrum Paul James was as lively as ever and Ceri Jones linked well. However, James Ratti won the award of ‘Man of the Match’ for great attacking play and a solid defence in an excellent performance.
