Penclawdd RFC 2nd XVv Fall Bay RFC
FALL BAY 8 - 7 PENCLAWDD
The closest of margins decided this first round cup match, with Fall Bay just edging a home victory from their Gower rivals, both teams were up for this local derby and found it difficult to break each other down.
The nearest anybody came to scoring during the first half, is when the Penclawdd pack drove close to the Fall Bay line, the outstretched hand of Andrew Jacket fell just short of the line, and some over enthusiastic rucking resulted in a penalty to the home side, who were then able to clear their line.
HALF TIME SCORE 0-0
The second half continued as the first had ended, the play was fast and furious, but the deadlock remained, The first point scoring opportunity came when Fall Bay were awarded a penalty just inside the Penclawdd half, up stepped full back Kirk Reardon and casually put the ball over the bar from a full forty meters. Fall Bay then picked up the pace of the game, and were rewarded with a try when the pack took the ball on, and were able to drive over in the corner to take the score to 8 - 0 the conversion attempt failed.
Penclawdd rallied in the final quarter, and some sustained pressure close to the end resulted in a try for John Sellick, after some excellent work from the forwards, Ceri Jones took a quick drop conversion to take the scores to 8 - 7. The restart was deep into injury time and the Penclawdd back line tried to keep the ball alive, the pack took the ball through several phases of play, but were unable to break out of defence thanks to some frantic defending from the home team. Fall Bay eventually was able to kill the ball and the referee blew for full time, much to the delight of the home side. It was a brave effort by Penclawdd who again were hit with injuries to some key players, and I am sure the side will be looking forward to playing Fall Bay in the two league fixtures later in the season.
