Match Report
Penclawdd started the game with a number of changes to the team which had taken the field against Pyle a week earlier. In the back-line, Darren Richards returned at centre and Paul James switched from inside to outside half. Up front, Spencer Bessant moved from the flank to the second row to replace Paul Isaac and Gareth Swistun slotted into the back row.
Trebanos started in a determined manner and showed a great deal of positive intent in the opening exchanges. Despite this early pressure, the visitors were unable to translate possession into points and the first quarter of the game ended scoreless.
Spencer Bessant and Richard Deakin in the Penclawdd lineout started to provide a good supply of possession for the home team and this created the platform from which a number of attacks started to develop. Some good passages of play were rewarded in the twenty fifth minute when full-back Rhys Williams slotted over a penalty goal following offside on the visitors twenty-two. Minutes later the lead extended to ten points when Williams started and finished a sweeping movement which was initiated deep in the Penclawdd half. Following a series of passes, prop Matthew Davies was stopped some twelve metres short of the Trebanos line. The ball was moved smartly to the right from the ensuing ruck before Williams sprinted over in the corner. His conversion of the try took his points tally to ten for the game and forty-six for the league games to date.
The visitors responded quickly to dispel any thoughts the home team may have had of running away with the game and scored an equally well crafted try a matter of minutes later. The visitors struck down the left wing with a move that involved a series of passes between forwards and backs and sent full back Peter Kane over in the left hand corner. Kane was unsuccessful with the conversion.
Half Time Score: Penclawdd 10 Trebanos 5
The game remained a keenly contested, close encounter well into the second half with neither team able to exert total dominance. The home teams set piece play grew in strength with the scrum posing problems for the visitors on a number of occasions. The score remained the same until the dying minutes when following a period of pressure on the Trebanos line, scrum half Steve Ham darted over to secure a Penclawdd victory. Williams was unsuccessful with the conversion.
