Match Report

Penclawdd returned to League action after two consecutive weekends of Cup competition and were looking to extend their four match unbeaten run in the league. Two enforced changes were necessary through the unavailability of Richard Deakin and Richard Jones both of whom were carrying knocks from the Llantrisant game the previous weekend. After his promising showing at Amman United, Anthony Griffiths started the game alongside Paul Isaac in the second row and after some promising performances in the second team Gareth Beynon was given his first outing of the season on the flank. In the battle of the "vets" for the inside centre berth, Darren Richards was given the nod ahead of Dewi James who sat out the start of the match on the bench. On the wing Jon Tanner returned instead of James Elliott.

The visitors took the lead after a quarter of an hour through a try by flanker Dai Owen and missed an opportunity to extend the lead a minute later when outside half Andrew Morgan missed a kickable penalty goal attempt. Just after half an hour full-back Rhys Williams opened the home teams account with a well struck forty metre penalty goal after Llandeilo had drifted offside in midfield.

The second half opened in a similar manner to the first with the two evenly matched teams sharing both possession and territory. The score remained the same until the final quarter of an hour. With a little under fifteen minutes to play, Rhys Williams stroked over his second penalty of the match to bring Penclawdd within two points of the visitors and this was closely followed by a moment of Williams inspiration when his chip ahead was well followed up by scrum half Paul James who collected the loose ball to dive over. Williams converted to take Penclawdd into a five point lead. A further penalty goal for the full-back extended the lead and had effectively sealed the victory before scrum-half James rounded the match off with his second try.
