Match Report

The 2nd XV travelled to Trebanos for their first game in three weeks after having games verses Ystradgynlais and Skewen cancelled.

Both sides took a while to settle in damp conditions that created a difficult playing surface. Early pressure from Trebanos was thwarted by an excellent Penclawdd defence. While the Penclawdd scrum proved to be dominant, the lineout battle was well and truly won by Trebanos who enjoyed a glut of possession.

During the first half forwards Stuart Barrow and Rhodri Foote showed up well in the loose with some good driving play, but the whole team deserved credit for the manner in which they attacked Trebanos who included a number of 1st XV members in their ranks.

Trebanos opened the scoring after 35 mins when sustained pressure led to a try in the corner. TREBANOS 5-0 PENCLAWDD

Just before half time Penclawdd outside half Chris Isaac kicked on and was just beaten to the touchdown by the cover defence. Seconds later, after good initial work from Stuart Barrow, Rhodri Foote and Robert Gunnell, Max Tew was held up a yard from the line.

Half Time: TREBANOS 5-0 PENCLAWDD

For a large part of the second half both teams cancelled each other out with the conditions worsening an errors creeping into the game.

After 60 mins Penclawdd introduced veteran wing Mike Isaac who replaced Matthew Rees and Isaac showed that he has lost none of the old sparkle with some enterprising counter-attacking (Mike hopes former-playing colleagues now resident ‘Down Under’ take note). Still life in the old dog!

A missed penalty attempt by Trebanos was fielded by James Banks who showed great vision to run the ball from his own line and link with his pack. Stuart Barrow, Kevin Hughes and Ben Rouge took play up to the Trebanos 22 metre line with some great driving play, but their efforts went unrewarded when Trebanos cleared.

Further pressure from Penclawdd again saw some aggressive rucking by the forwards with powerful charges from props Andrew Jackett and Ben Rouge. The pack took play up to the Trebanos 10 metre line where Phil Sage was released to make a dash for the corner, only to be tackled into touch 5 metres short.

With time nearly up Trebanos managed to work their way up field and pinch a try to seal the game at 10-0 with the last action of the match.

Final Score: TREBANOS 10-0 PENCLAWDD

This was an excellent battling display from the 2nd XV who played a Trebanos outfit that fielded at least half a dozen first XV squad members. The management could not fault the team for its commitment with encouraging displays coming from Rhodri Foote, Matthew Rees and James Banks, but voted No. 8 Stuart Barrow as man of the match for an excellent display.
