Match Report
Penclawdd travelled to Gorseinon for what was an important league game, when a win would put ‘the show back on the road’.
In perfect warm, dry conditions both teams took a while to settle with Penclawdd exerting much of the early pressure but were thwarted by some determined home defence.
The back row of Gareth Beynon, Carl Bushell and Stuart Barrow were effective in winning some good ball on the floor, while Ceri Jones pinned Gorseinon in their own half with some excellent tactical kicking.
On 20 mins Penclawdd opened the scoring following good attacking play from Stuart Barrow, Anthony Griffiths and Gary Humphries which resulted in a 5 metre scrum on the Gorseinon line. Scrum half Steve Ham broke blind and fed inside to No.8 Stuart Barrow who powered over. Ceri Jones added the conversion. GORSEINON 0-7 PENCLAWDD.
Half Time: GORSEINON 0-7 PENCLAWDD
Paul Wilcox was introduced on the wing for Penclawdd for the injured Chris Isaac and was immediately in defensive action preventing a Gorseinon try in the corner. A second attack by the home side broke down when centre Gary Humphries intercepted and raced away only to be hauled down metres from the line.
Gorseinon opened their account when a speculative chip was allowed to bounce by the Penclawdd defence which resulting in the blind-side flanker gathering the ball to race 30 metres to score. GORSEINON 5-7 PENCLAWDD.
Ceri Jones immediately replied with a penalty after good work by Stuart Barrow. GORSEINON 5-10 PENCLAWDD.
Hooker Kevin Hughes won a ball against the head from a scrum on the Gorseinon 25 metre line and No. 8 Stuart Barrow picked up and broke through three tacklers to score an impressive try. Again Ceri Jones added the conversion, GORSEINON 5-17 PENCLAWDD.
A good kick from Ceri Jones pegged Gorseinon back into a defensive position. From the resulting lineout won by James Foote, forwards Carl Bushell and Richard ‘Tweety’ ‘Willie John’ Phillips drove to the line and Paul ‘Toyah’ Wilcox picked up to crash over and seal an excellent win.
This was an excellent much needed win to boost moral and saw some solid performances particularly from Kevin Hughes (Capt), Gareth Beynon, Stuart Barrow and Carl Bushell. However the management voted Ceri Jones as Man of the Match for an excellent display.
Final Score: GORSEINON 5-22 PENCLAWDD
Tries: Stuart Barrow (2), Paul Wilcox
Conversions: Ceri Jones (2)
Penalty Goals: Ceri Jones (1)
Penclawdd Man of the Match: Ceri Jones
