WRU Division Two outfit Llantrisant RFC proved to be too strong for a spirited Penclawdd team in this Principality Cup Third Round tie played at the Recreation Ground. The fixture was played in glorious conditions on a surface which was in superb condition despite the heavy overnight rain.

The home team had the better of the opening exchanges and deservedly took the lead from a forty metre penalty goal from the boot of full-back Rhys Williams. Unfortunately for the home support their team suffered two crucial injuries in quick succession with second row Richard Deakin and outside half James Ratti having to leave the field with leg and facial injuries respectively. For the remainder of the first period Llantrisant came more and more into the game. Shortly after William’s’ penalty the visitors struck twice with tres from number eight Sean Gilbertson and flanker Matt Newlands, both of which were converted by outside half Ian Jones. Shortly before half time the lead was extended via a well taken try by second row Nick Jones.

The second half was always likely to be an uphill battle for the Division 5 team and so it proved with the visitors running in a further five tries through scrum half Ian Worgan, centre Kevin Jenkins, wings Steve Allinson and Rhodri Evans and replacement Andrew Davies. Number ten Jones converted three. To their credit the home team never capitulated and were fighting to the final whistle with the final score line probably probably flattering the visitors somewhat . Whilst the difference in standard between the two Divisions was clear for all to see, the exercise will surely have proven beneficial for the Penclawdd players who will have learnt a great deal from playing against this level of opposition.
