Match Report
Penclawdd travelled to Ammanford to face Division 5 North Champions Llangefni for the right to play in Division 4 West next season.
Penclawdd started into a strong wind and were put under early pressure by the Anglesey side who took the lead with an easy penalty. Llangefni 3 - 0 Penclawdd
However Penclawdd fought back well through Richard Deakin who won good quality lineout ball and was driven up field by his forwards. Ceri Jones darted down the blindside and fed wing Jon Tanner for the score. Llangefni 3 - 5 Penclawdd
Unfortunately for Penclawdd Tîm Williams and Paul James clashed heads resulting in both players having to go to hospital for treatment. They were replaced by Rob Richards and Owen Wiliiams. This knocked Penclawdd’s rhythm and Llangefni took full advantage with an easy penalty. Llangefni 6 - 5 Penclawdd
Llangefni took further advantage when after excellent pressure from their back row, their backs moved the ball along the line for their centre to score wide on the left. Llangefni 11- 5 Penclawdd
The remainder of the half saw play concentrated around the half-way line with errors largely dominating play. Gareth Swistun received a yellow card after infringing at a maul but Llangefni failed to make their advantage count.
HALF-TIME: Llangefni 11- 5 Penclawdd
The second half started with Penclawdd on the offensive. Good driving play by the forwards particularly Paul Isaac and Matthew Davies produced good clean ball for the three-quarters. Rob Richards, now playing at outside-half, put in a neat little chip to fox the Llangefni defence and showed great determination to follow up and score under the posts. Rhys Williams added the conversion to take the score to Llangefni 11 – 12 Penclawdd.
Llangefni showed excellent spirit and fought back strongly with their outstanding back-row to the fore. Their forwards gained good ground and won a penalty that was slotted from 30 metres. Llangefni 14 – 12 Penclawdd
Immediately from the re-start Penclawdd put pressure on their opponents defence, which failed to deal with a good kick from Rhys Williams. The Penclawdd forwards seized their chance and piled on the pressure through Richard Deakin, Owen Williams and Tîm Eynon. Ceri Jones then darted blind to feed second row Paul Isaac who powered over for the score. Llangefni 14 – 17 Penclawdd
However the North Wales Champions showed their quality when their forwards put Penclawdd under severe pressure, particularly in the scrum where Penclawdd were a man short after Spencer Bessant received a yellow card for offside. Their sustained pressure told when their pack provided excellent ball that was moved along the backs for the full-back to touch down out wide. Llangefni 19 – 17 Penclawdd
The game seemed to be slipping away for Penclawdd when Llangefni broke away again after good work from their back-row. Despite an excellent cover tackle from Gareth Swistun the Llangefni No.8 managed to squeeze over in the corner. Llangefni 24 – 17 Penclawdd
Llangefni missed a glorious opportunity to seal the game when, after a tremendous run by their No.6, their full-back spilled the ball with the line at his mercy.
Penclawdd introduced prop Andrew Jackett to solidify the creaking scrum with ten minutes remaining. Rob Richards again took full advantage of quick ball to put in another neat chip and showed good strength to gather and feed centre Phil Sage. Sage fed Matthew Tucker who showed good pace to reach the Llangefni 22-metre line where the Penclawdd forwards through Leigh Ratti, Owen Williams and Andrew Jackett gave him tremendous support. The ball was moved blind to Paul Isaac who slipped a lovely pass to wing Max Tew to score in the corner. Llangefni 24 – 22 Penclawdd
With the scent of victory in their nostrils the Penclawdd team put their opponents under tremendous pressure, particularly through Paul Isaac, Ceri Jones and Spencer Bessant. With 2 minutes remaining they were rewarded for their efforts when Llangefni conceded a penalty on the half-way line. With the wind at his back Rhys Williams showed great concentration to land the penalty and bury the hopes of Llangefni who must have wished they had taken their earlier chances.
FINAL SCORE: Llangefni 24-25 Penclawdd
Penclawdd Man of the Match: Rob Richards
This was an excellent performance by Penclawdd that secured promotion to Division 4 West. Although Llangefni wasted opportunities to win the game, Penclawdd showed great spirit and character to fight back and win the game. All the players must be congratulated for their performances particularly Richard Deakin, Ceri Jones and Paul Isaac. However the Man of the Match award went to youth player Rob Richards for an excellent display full of promise and hope for the future.
