Match Report
Penclawdd welcomed Vardre to Graig Y Coed and were looking to complete a noteable double over their old rivals.
With a strong wind at their backs Penclawdd made a very positive start to this encounter and used the conditions to good effect through Chris Isaac who kept Vardre pinned in their own half with some good positional kicks.
James Foote won some good lineout ball at the front of the line and was backed up well by skipper Kevin Hughes who made excellent yardage with some effective driving play. Rhodri Foote, Will James and Mark Broom were also prominent.
It was the visitors who came close to opening the scoring with a period of constant pressure. Penclawdd showed their defensive qualities through Mark Broom, Will James and Steve Ham, who eventually relieved the pressure.
On 25 minutes James Foote surged through the Vardre defence with a storming run, leaving his side in a good attacking position. This enabled Penclawdd to open the scoring after good play by Ryan Harry, excellent support from prop Richard Guy and an excellent break by substitute flanker James Banks who drew the cover defence to feed Mark Broom who made his conversion kick easier by scoring ‘under the sticks’.
Half Time: Penclawdd 7-0 Vardre
Even though they gained good lineout possession through James Foote and Will James, Penclawdd did not use their advantage to great effect. However, the start of the second half saw them start with positive intent through Mark Broom, Will James and Kevin Hughes who powered into the visitor’s defence.
Although Penclawdd failed to score Ryan Harry, Paul Wilcox, Tim Jones and Owen Guy exhibited some neat touches. Mark Broom also combined well with James Foote to send Kevin Hughes to within a metre of the line.
Further pressure from substitute centre Mike Isaac, Dean Vaughan, Steve Isaac and Matthew Rees took play to within 5 metres. Mark Broom crashed over from a tap penalty but the try was disallowed for ‘crossing’.
After 25 minutes Will James won clean ball at a lineout and burst away from the resulting driving maul to feed James Foote who popped to Mark Broom on the hoof. Vardre managed to stem the tide but conceded a 5 metre scrum. No.8 Steve Isaac fed Steve Ham who put substitute wing Andrew Nicholas over in the corner. Penclawdd 12-0 Vardre
To their credit Vardre fought back but failed to penetrate the home defence for whom Mark Broom, Will James and Kevin Hughes were outstanding.
Penclawdd ‘ran down the clock’ effectively with James Foote winning excellent possession and Mike Isaac showing his experience in midfield.
Final Score: Penclawdd 12-0 Vardre
Scorers - Tries: Mark Broom (1), Andrew Nicholas (1)
Con: Mark Broom
Penclawdd Man of the Match: Mark Broom
For the second week running this was an excellent win for the 2nd XV against much improved opposition. Skipper Kevin Hughes led from the front and was given excellent support from his pack particularly from youth player Will James. However, the management decided to award Mark Broom, playing out of position on the flank, the man of the match award for a tremendous display.
