Match Report
Penclawdd journeyed to Ystradgynlais with a very depleted squad of 16 players to face an Ystradgynlais side that had held unbeaten league leaders South Gower to a 10-10 draw the previous week.
In wet conditions it was Ystradgynlais who took the game to Penclawdd with some enterprising attacking play. However, the Penclawdd defence held firm with some tremendous tackling by the whole team with Jon Sellick, Mike Davies, Robert Gunnell, Gareth Swistun, Phil Sage and Dewi James particularly prominent with Richard ‘Tweety’ Phillips providing some good lineout possession.
The first score of the game came after 35 minutes when sustained pressure eventually led to the Penclawdd defensive line being breached for an Ystradgynlais try. Ystradgynlais 5-0 Penclawdd
Just before half time Penclawdd captain Gareth Swistun had to leave the field due to injury and was replaced by club stalwart Richard Guy.
Half Time: Ystradgynlais 5-0 Penclawdd
The second half saw Ystradgynlais gain further dominance when a burst by their forwards resulted in their right wing being worked over in the corner. Ystradgynlais 10-0 Penclawdd
Penclawdd responded with positive intent with good play from James Banks, Steve Isaac and Richard Phillips.
The forwards through Andrew Jackett, Stuart Howells and Ben Rouge drove up field and the ball was worked to centre Phil Sage who chipped ahead only to be beaten to the touchdown by the home defence.
A lapse in concentration led to Ystradgynlais breaking through to score a ‘soft’ try under the sticks. Ystradgynlais 17-0 Penclawdd
Unfortunately on 65 minutes Penclawdd No.8 Steve Isaac had to leave the field with an injury after an excellent performance, to leave 14 men on the field.
The side showed great character and never gave up the cause and their efforts were rewarded when the ball was worked out wide to wing Paul Wilcox who showed his opposite number a clean pair of heels to race clear and feed David Lewis for the score. David Lewis added the conversion. Ystradgynlais 17-7 Penclawdd
From the kick off Ystradgynlais gathered possession and their forwards combined to send their right wing over for his second try of the day. Ystradgynlais 22-7 Penclawdd
Penclawdd were not daunted however and kept attacking the home defence, particularly through flanker Stuart Howells, Andrew Jackett, Ben Rouge and Jon Sellick. Ystradgynlais conceded a number of penalties and Stuart Howells took full advantage by crashing into the home defence. From the third penalty conceded in a minute, Howells fed hooker Jon Sellick who sold a beautiful dummy and fed centre Robert Gunnell to crash over in the corner for a well deserved try.
Final Score: Ystradgynlais 22-12 Penclawdd
Scorers - Tries: Robert Gunnell, David Lewis, Con: David Lewis
This was a tremendous display by the 2nd XV who had a number of regular players missing due to injury and 1st XV ‘call up’s’. However, despite coming uner severe pressure from a young lively Ystradgynlais team, they showed great spirit and determination in their performance. The management could not fault the whole team with their display but decided that Jon Sellick should get the Man of the Match award for a committed display.
