Mumbles vs Penclawdd 2nd team report – Saturday 3rd November
The second team band wagon roles on, with over fifty Penclawdd supporters leaving Mumbles this weekend having seen an exceptional performance from our boys. After this match, it is easy to see why the seconds are attracting such a following. Their commitment throughout the eighty minutes was faultless, giving a demonstration of defensive tacking that even "Clive the Ship" would be proud of !!
Mumbles came out in impressive style and for the first ten minutes moved the ball in slick fashion along their backs to good effect. The Penclawdd backline and back row, together as a unit, held strong and even though Mumbles managed to come close to scoring on 5 minutes some excellent work by our defence managed to turn the attacker onto his back and prevented a touch down. Even more pressure followed on immediately and many of the spectators may have doubted how long it would be before Mumbles got on top. With the initial storm weathered, however, Penclawdd began to make ground into the opposition half and forced their stand off half into a glut of errors – he will not forget the sight of "Gonk" Swistun and Stuart Barrow bearing down on him for some weeks to come !! One such forced error gave Mark Broom an easy penalty chance ten yards in front of the Mumbles posts to give us a 3-nil lead after 20 minutes. A similar forced mistake, this time Mumbles going over the top in the ruck, allowed Broom to extend the lead to 6-nil right on the stroke of half time.
The start of the second half saw Mumbles strengthen their hand with a number of influential replacements. Good first phase possession in the line out and scrummage gave them plenty of scope for launching further attacking moves but the Penclawdd tackling remained AWESOME with some of the "young bloods" such as William James and Rhodri Evans showing the way. Our defensive line kicking from Chris Isaac at fly half and full back Mark Broom helped relieve the pressure but for most of the period we could not escape from our half of the field. Our lead was cut to within a point, when from a rare excursion into the Mumbles half we lost possession, a long speculative clearance bounced backwards into the arms of the chasing Mumbles winger who went over for the try. A difficult conversion from the touchline was missed to leave the score at Mumbles 5 Penclawdd 6.
Our boys were determined to ensure this was not the beginning of the end. A clear cut chance for Mumbles to cross over for a second try was thwarted by an excellent "pincer" tackle between two of our defenders which forced the ball to pop out and over the dead ball line just as it was about to be grounded. Then, as Penclawdd made another advance into Mumbles territory, a high kick up field from Chris Isaac fell loose for the ball to be hacked up field by Robert Gunnell who, as he graciously admitted in the clubhouse afterwards, was narrowly beaten to the touch down by centre Phil Sage. The Donks supporters went wild in celebration of a superb 11-5 victory against strong opposition.
With three wins on the trot, the seconds now go on to a hard test in Ystradgynlais next weekend with increasing confidence. Everyone came out of this match with great credit and again the selection of man of the match was difficult. Gareth Swistun lead from the front as deputising captain, Steve Isaac again played well in the back row, but eventually the management selected Carl Bushell for his dogged performance at scrum half. A special mention also for all the Youth players who helped bolster the side this weekend, they certainly offer a brighter future for the senior ranks.
